With the annual Grey Cup festivities well underway in our nations capital, the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts get set to go head-to-head this Sunday in the 105th Grey Cup championship. Heading into this weekends tilt, the Stampeders are heavy favourites to knock off the Argonauts and claim their 3rd Grey Cup in the last ten years. Calgary, coming off a loss in last years Grey Cup, was the class of the Canadian Football League this season setting the pace with a league-best 13-4 record while finishing first in an overpowered CFL west division. Toronto on the other hand, won the East Division despite finishing with a mediocre 9-9 record and barely squeaking past the Saskatchewan Roughriders 25-21 in last Sundays East Final.

The Riders, who made the East Final after beating the Ottawa RedBlacks in their cross-over game a week prior, came up just short of giving CFL fans an all western Grey Cup for the first time ever after a season that saw the West rule over the East. The Stamps however, had a much more difficult foe to slay on their way to this years Grey Cup, as Calgary narrowly defeated their provincial rivals the high-powered Edmonton Eskimos 32-28 to secure their ticket to Ottawa. In two meetings head-to-head against Toronto this season, Calgary breezed past the Argos on both occasions, outscoring them by a total of 64-31 and looking dominant.

Despite Calgary finishing the 2017 CFL season putting up 523 total points as opposed to the Argonauts 482, the Stamps and Argos both match up evenly on offence heading into this weekends CFL final with both teams possessing their fair share of weapons. On the ground, the Stampeders are difficult to contain. Implementing a tough rushing game to grind down their opponents, Calgary’s rushing is their key strength. Running-back Jerome Messam, who started his CFL career with the Lions, had another terrific campaign in 2017 rushing for over 1,000-yards while adding nine majors on the year while Roy Finch, who on 73 returned kicks this season rushed for a stunning 1,200-yards.

While the Argonauts don’t have anyone who can compete with those rushing totals, they do have CFL veteran quarterback — Ricky Ray. After spending the prime years of his career as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos, Ray looks to take home his fourth Grey Cup Championship in what could be his final game. Besides being a three-time Grey Cup champion, Ray is also fourth all-time in passing yards in CFL history and completed more passes than any other QB in CFL this year. Calgary QB Bo-Levi Mitchell is also a strong pivot, but at this point in his career he has a long way to go to reaching the pedigree of Ricky Ray. Ray, now 38, has also enjoyed a strong on-field connection with wide-receiver S.J. Green. Green, in his tenth CFL season, hooked up with Ray 104-times this season for a total of 1462-yards receiving. With Calgarys dominance on the ground and Torontos strong executive in the air, the key to victory on Sunday for both teams could very well come down to defence and special teams.

For the Stampeders dominant secondary, linebacker Alex Singleton will be a player to watch this weekend. Singleton, 23, was second in the entire CFL (only to BC’s Solomon Elimimian) in total tackles, registering 125 on the year to go along with four sacks. Besides setting the bar for the leagues most potent offence, Calgary also led the entire CFL with 349 total points allowed all season, nearly 100-yards less than the second best team in that category. Look for both QBs to be under pressure this Sunday as Toronto and Calgary both totaled 50 sacks each this CFL season. Calgary also holds the slight edge on special teams, with kicker Rene Paredes having completed 91% of his attempted field goals this season compared to Lirim Hajrullahu of the Argos who finished the 2017 season with an 81% completion rate. In addition to that, the Stampeders are also slightly better on punt returns. With the numbers telling of an uphill battle for the Argos, do the Stamps have enough left in the tank to avoid the upset?

Who’s hot for their respective teams heading into this weekends Grey Cup? For Calgary, RB Roy Finch had 81-yards rushing on four carries with one TD in last Sundays win over Edmonton while for Toronto, corner linebacker Akwasi Owusu-Ansah had six tackles and one interception when the Argos beat the Roughriders last weekend. Kick-off for this Sunday’s Grey Cup is scheduled for 3pm Pacific time at TD Place in Ottawa.

Patriots vs Jaguars

The Jaguars (0-0) will open up the preseason against the defending Super Bowl champions on the road Thursday. The New England Patriots (0-0) hosted the Jacksonville squad for a pair of joint practices earlier this week. This year marks the 58th annual training camp for the Patriots, including their 15th consecutive camp at Gillette Stadium. Patriots vs Jaguars will be broadcast by the Preseason Week 1 NFL Network on Thursday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be seen in every New England state, as well as Alaska and Hawaii.

Patriots vs Jaguars Live

The preseason network’s flagship station is WBZ-TV CBS in Boston. WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche provides play-by-play and is joined by former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria in the broadcast booth. Former Patriots linebacker Matt Chatham will provide sideline analysis along with WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton. Patriots Football Weekly’s beat writers Paul Perillo and Andy Hart will also provide insight and analysis. New England Patriots’ Tom Brady reacts after officials reviewed a play during the second half of the NFL Super Bowl 51 football game against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, in Houston.

Patriots preseason schedule:

Thursday, Aug. 10, 7:30 p.m. Jacksonville Jaguars at New England Patriots
Saturday, Aug. 19, 8 p.m. New England Patriots at Houston Texans
Friday, Aug. 25, 7 p.m. New England Patriots at Detroit Lions
Thursday, Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m. New York Giants at New England Patriots

The New England Patriots (2-0) welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) to Foxboro on Sunday in what is being pegged as one of the most lopsided contests of Week 3.Tight end Rob Gronkowski, left tackle Nate Solder, running back Mike Gillislee, and special teams ace Matthew Slater are unlikely to play, but that just opens the door for other players to make an impact. The New England Patriots are hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first preseason game of 2017. We will have our first chance to see how all of the new toys fit into the roster, with running back Rex Burkhead, wide receiver Brandin Cooks, tight end Dwayne Allen, edge defenders Kony Ealy, Derek Rivers, and Deatrich Wise, linebackers David Harris and Harvey Langi, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore all potentially making their New England debut.

But how much will Brady play? Let’s look at Brady’s statlines from every preseason Week 1 since 2007 as a reference.

2016 – Did not play
2015 – 1-for-4 passing, 10 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs
2014 – Did not play
2013 – 7-for-8 passing, 65 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs
2012 – 4-for-7 passing, 30 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 1 sack
2011 – Did not play
2010 – 5-for-8 passing, 67 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs
2009 – 10-for-15 passing, 100 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
2008 – Did not play
2007 – 5-for-7 passing, 34 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

Based on the past decade of work, Brady does not play much in preseason openers. If he does, he plays one or two series — maybe a quarter maximum — and then gets off the field for the backup to play. The only exception was 2009, when he was returning from ACL surgery. Perhaps it is worth noting that the only time Brady tore his ACL during the regular season came after a preseason that he did not play at all.

If this is the trend the Patriots have followed, one would assume there is a good chance Brady plays one or two series maximum in Thursday’s preseason game. He did not play at all in Week 1 last year at age 39, only played one series in 2015 at age 38, and did not play at all in 2014 at age 37. By that logic, there is a decent chance Brady does not play at all.

But what does that mean for Jimmy Garoppolo? The Patriots’ backup quarterback showed what he can do to the rest of the league in the first six quarters of last year’s regular season, and is widely considered the best backup quarterback in the league. Garoppolo is not exactly a proven commodity, but he does have an impressive track record.

Garoppolo has played a considerable amount in each of his three preseason openers, throwing at least 18 passes in each of the last two. But this year, with Garoppolo more seasoned and on the verge of a new contract, would the Patriots use this as an opportunity to get a look at third-stringer Jacoby Brissett?

Belichick did not want to talk about quarterback reps Tuesday morning.

“Yeah, we’ll make that decision later on in the week,” Belichick said. “I mean, right now, we’re just working on getting through this practice and tomorrow. You know, we’ll figure that out.”

Based on the way things have gone in the past and Garoppolo’s status as the backup quarterback, my guess would be that Brady plays one series (two if the first series goes poorly), and Garoppolo takes over for the remainder of the first half. Then, Jacoby Brissett gets the entirety of the second half with a team of players who will likely be on the fringe of the roster at best.

All we know for sure is that we won’t know anything until just before kickoff Thursday. Regardless of who is at quarterback, it’s exciting to have football back in Gillette Stadium this week.

We can expect most of the starters to see at least a series or two of action, with the backups handling things the rest of the way. Look for the rookies to get a lot of playing time, notably running back Christian McCaffrey, as the coaches continue to evaluate how they best fit in the game plan. Houston Texans

In this year’s draft, the Texans traded their 2017 first-round pick (No. 25) and 2018 first-rounder to Cleveland to move up to No. 12. Houston did that because it feared the team picking at 13th, the Cardinals, were going to take Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and reigning national champion. The Texans took Watson as they had a need at quarterback after dealing last year’s starter, free-agent bust Brock Osweiler, to Cleveland.

O’Brien has been signing Watson’s praises thus far in training camp, and he could beat out Tom Savage for the starting job. Thus both guys could play longer than expected Wednesday because it’s a close competition. Watson is one of the early NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year betting favourites. The initial depth chart issued by the Texans has Watson at No. 2.

Houston already has suffered one major injury in camp as starting receiver Will Fuller broke his collarbone and will miss 2-3 months. The No. 21 overall pick in the 2016 draft caught 47 passes for 635 yards and two scores as a rookie and was a good punt returner.

Carolina Panthers

It’s the first professional game for Carolina rookie Christian McCaffrey, the 2015 Heisman runner-up when he set the NCAA single-season record for all-purpose yardage. The Panthers will line up McCaffrey all over the field: at running back, receiver even a Wildcat quarterback. Plus he can return kicks. McCaffrey is another Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate.

There’s no quarterback battle on this team as 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton is the starter, but it’s not clear if he can play Wednesday. After he threw for the first four days of training camp, the Panthers shut down Newton when he had soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder. So if Newton plays vs. Houston, it might be to simply hand off. The Panthers have also been missing second-round pick Curtis Samuel for all but one practice in camp because of a hamstring injury.

NFL Hall of Fame 2017

The Dallas Cowboys want to prove their surprisingly successful 2016 season was not a fluke as they start their 2017 preseason campaign. The Cowboys will face the Arizona Cardinals to kick off the preseason schedule on Thursday night (5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET, NBC) in the Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio.

The Cowboys, led by rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott, stunned the NFL with an 11-game winning streak on their way to finishing with a 13-3 record and capturing the NFC East title. The Cardinals are looking to rebound after a highly disappointing 2016 season. The Cardinals finished with a 7-8-1 record in 2016 after capturing the NFC West title in 2015.

One of the greatest news for the fans is that they can stream the game live on 3rd of August on FOX SPORTS GO.

Coaches often use the early preseason games to give non-starters an opportunity to earn a position on the team. But it’s also about survival.

Palmer, 37, threw for 4,233 yards last year with 26 touchdowns. Fitzgerald, 33, has been with the Cardinals throughout his 13-year career and is coming off a season in which he caught 107 passes for 1,023 yards. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott is coming off a brilliant rookie year, and he is one of the main reasons that the team is expected to make a legitimate run at the NFC title this year.

Prescott threw for 3,667 yards with a 23-4 touchdown/interception ratio last year. He knows he can improve in several areas in his second year.

After a week of training camp, the Cowboys and Cardinals will. I really wanted to make a good first impression in live action. The Scout tipped: Uae Prince

Noble Gift made the early running with Abdon not far off but Uae Prince and Khairaat were well out the back. Garcia moved up with a furlong and a half to go but it was Dark Red who clung on by a head from Fabricate. Uae Prince looked to have the pace in the closing stages but got boxed in and could only finish fourth.

However, after a stewards’ inquiry the royal runner Fabricate was adjudged to have been bumped by Dark Red and was awarded the win.
