FINA World Championships 2017
The second night of action from the pool at Budapest at the FINA World Championships 2017 featured lots of exciting action. Hungarian Katinka Hosszu delivered a gold medal for the home crowd with her third straight 200 IM World Title. Adam Peaty and Sarah Sjostrom just missed their World Records in their respective events but they defended their 2015 World Titles in the process. Great Britain picked up another gold on the night with Ben Proud in the 50 fly.
The 17th FINA World Championships 2017, are held in Budapest, Hungary from 14 to 30 July 2017. Americans picked up medals from Kevin Cordes (silver) in the 100 breast, Kelsi Worrell (bronze) in the 100 fly and Madisyn Cox (bronze) in the 200 IM.
OLYMPIC 400m freestyle champion Mack Horton is so unrepentant about calling out his Chinese rival Sun Yang as a drug cheat at last year’s Rio Games, that he has done it again leading into the world championships in Budapest.
Two days ahead of their rematch over 400m in Budapest, Horton was asked about his rivalry with Sun, who is defending the world title. The Australian responded: “I don’t know if it’s a rivalry (between us). I think it’s a rivalry between clean athletes and athletes who have tested positive, but there should be some good racing.”
Sun served a secret three-month suspension in 2014 after giving a positive test to a banned heart medication. He had served the doping ban and returned to competition before it was announced that he had fallen foul of the rules.
His Chinese fans created a social media storm in the wake of Horton’s comments at the Rio Olympics and the Australian is still regularly trolled by Sun’s supporters.
The Olympic 200m freestyle champion, who is coached by Australian Denis Cotterell, leads this year’s world rankings with a best of 3:42.16, two seconds faster than third-ranked Horton’s best so far this year of 3:44.18. But Horton, who won the Olympic crown in 3:41.55, warned his rivals not to underestimate him in Budapest. Watch FINA World Championships 2017
He said he felt “relaxed’’ about his prospects for the championships and did not feel the need to redeem himself after a parasitic infection affected his performance at the last world titles, where he won a bronze medal in the 800m freestyle, but missed the final of the 400m and 1500m. He said that experience gave him the mental fortitude to win on the world stage in Rio.“When I think about that 2015 experience, it was more that’s what losing feels like,’’ he said.“I know that if I do lose it’s not the end of the world, so don’t stress, relax, it’s going to be okay. That’s what I took away from 2015.
“I went from the lowest point, hopefully, of my swimming career to the highest and you know what that lowest feels like so you can pretty much deal with anything.
